DESCRIPTION
The Cathedral
Located at one side of the main square of Cusco, it was build over one of the most important temple in the Inca period dedicated to the God Wiracocha. The platform of the construction has the shape of a Latin cross, and it’s composed by five naves in roman style. It was built in 1560. It was finish in 1668. The difference in the majority of the temples in Cusco, they didn’t suffer any damages in the earthquake of 1650. Like the one in Lima, the Cathedral of Cusco has gothic characteristic. It has amazing altars with a very renaissance style such as baroque and neoclassic. They are beautiful works of cusquenian art, its pulpit made out of wood and all carved by hand. It also has many paintings from the school of art of Cusco, paintings from the artist Diego Quispe Tito, Basilio Santa Cruz Pumacallo, Basilio Pacheco y Marco Zapata, artist that made a very peculiar painting of the last supper in with the main dish is the roasted Guinea Pig.
Qoricancha
If Cusco was the navel of the World, according to the conception Inca, the Qorikancha was the religious center of Cusco, is worth saying, the center of the center, as much in the geographic aspect as in the religious and politic. From here started four of the main treks that lead to the four main parts of the Universe; it was the residence of the Gods and Guacas in the Inka period. In all the important architectonic centers built for the Incas, it was impossible for the temple of the Sun not to be there, buildings made out of rocks that are well polish just like the temple of the Qoricancha where you can see from the front of the building how well polish all of the rocks are. This temple was one of the first places the Spaniards had in mind to rob, being that one could find objects made out of gold and silver that were used as offerings to their gods.
Sacsayhuaman
Sacsayhuaman is a composed Quechua word, Sacsay that means satisfied, and the huaman that is hawk. The hawk is a bird of prey that is most common in the Peruvian Andes; it was the protector of the first Inka, Mank Qhapaj. Its construction will have started between the centuries XIV and XV. To finish the work of art it took seven decades and it took about 20,000 men to do it. In the times of the Incas was called “sun’s house” and it was a great religious center of great importance in the local tradition, when the Spanish arrive they thought that it was a fortress because of the position and shape, it has three levels whose walls are made of rock and they are perfectly align, and this gives someone the impression of a great fortress on impenetrable access. The first wall is the most impressive of them all because of the size, made out of rocks that weight 90-125 tons every single one of them, making it impossible for access, unless one would go through the three doors in the complex.
Q'enqo
It was said that it was a ceremonial center and place for rituals, it has an amphitheater that has 19 windows that were used to worship, there is also maize that leads to the underground galleries, in the superior part there is canals and carved shapes There is also a patio that has a semicircular shape that has a parameter that is close by some great niches that surround a stone or wanka of little thickness locked up in an enclosure, there one can find images within their own chapel. Between the things that the Spanish were not able to destroy from this monument:
- The Intiwatana
- The Zigzag Canal
- The amphitheater
- The Room of the sacrifices
- Wrought Benches, aqueducts as gear, narrow streets and short platforms.
Pucapucara
Pukapukara means red fortress, about this word is because the location of the group and the existence of some semi-circular environment, about the red is because the color of the land. This name was used in this century. In Pucapucara there are places, interior squares, baths, aqueducts and a ancient trail that is very well know. The buildings are made of stones they have many sizes between medium and little ones, on the surface of the rocks is very rugged, comparing with other archeological rest. The urban disposition is appropriate and functional. The traditional information said that when the Inka decided to visit the bath of Tambomachay, the huge retinue of soldiers, dancers, and others stay in Pukapukara that was a quarter and inn (place of lodging and were they deposit food) The construction workers built three walls that has irregular floors, this establish three levels for the same place.
Tambomachay
Tambo corresponds to collective lodging with all the necessary to accommodate a lot of people that will sty for a short period of time, machay means place of rest. The name comes from the Inca times. The tradition knows this place as the “Bath of the Ñusta” due to the special circumstance exist two aqueducts that have clean water all year, they come from wells that are well-known places single by the constructors, and it seems that they brought forth the bases of the construction Inka; the volume is uniform, the water comes together and it falls into which is well-known as a liturgical source like “Baño of the Inka”, in front of this building there is an immense tower of circular plant to watchtower The building has three floors that come from the ground up, it’s equivalent as three store house. The construction is made in an exceptional way; this rocks were very well adjusted, without mud mortar.
